Looking to boost your mental health and wellness? Here’s why skincare might be the answer.
And tips on where the heck to start!
How are you? – No, really, how are you friend?! Things have been tough lately, Charleston. Amid a national mental health crisis, I want to give you tips to boost your mental health and personal wellness, using my favorite modality, skincare!
I am Bryn, a licensed Esthetician and owner of Beauty by Bryn. Where I focus on supporting self-care and self-love by offering intuitive facials that heal the skin and nourish the soul.
What is Self-care?
Self-care involves practicing behaviors that promote your personal wellness. Personal wellness is presented in a collection of 9 different categories of wellness:
-
Mental wellness
-
Physical wellness
-
Emotional wellness
-
Spiritual wellness
-
Intellectual wellness
-
Occupational wellness
-
Financial wellness
-
Environmental wellness
-
Social wellness
A picture-perfect goal of wellness would be to maintain care in all areas evenly. Of course, this is what we strive for, not a constant reality (at least not for us normal humans, looking at you Wonder Woman!)
In this article, we will explain how mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social wellness all can be nurtured through skincare.
I’m sure you’ve heard of all the Instagram-worthy ideas of self-care, right? Like, extravagant milk bubble baths in ancient caves or you’ve seen fabulous selfies of people wearing face masks on #selfcaresunday. But is this really self-care?
It can be! A moment that you dedicate to taking care of yourself and your skin. But only for a moment. Let’s consider something more consistent and long-lasting.
A consistent skincare routine is the ultimate self-care. Imagine gifting yourself, and your skin, love and healing every day. Imagine how relaxed, cared for, and loved you would feel. This act of generous self-care will target your physical wellness, mental wellness, and emotional wellness. That’s the kind of self-care I’m talking about!
Let’s start building your routine!
Let’s build the perfect at-home skincare routine for you to improve your self-care practice, mental health, and overall well-being.
Your basic regimen will consist of 3 products, facial cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Of course, there are TONS of other products that we could put into the routine, especially to target certain goals, but let’s create a foundation first.
Determine your skin type!
To find the best skincare products for you, you will first want to determine your skin type. Check out the list below and see which one resembles your skin the most.
- Dry skin- If you have dry skin, your skin will generally produce less oil, it may appear dull, rough, or flaky. It often feels tight and less elastic.
- Oily skin- If you have oily skin, your skin generally produces more oil. It may appear shiny or greasy or you may notice you have enlarged pores.
- Normal skin- If you have normal skin, your skin doesn’t feel too dry or too oily and is less prone to sensitivities or blemishes.
- Combination skin- If you have combination skin, you will notice your skin has both dry and oily areas, typically oily in the T-zone and dry on the cheeks.
- Sensitive skin- If you have sensitive skin, your skin may appear red and feel like it is burning, itching, or dry.
What are your skin goals?
Our next step when choosing the best skincare products for you is to consider your skin goals. Do you have concerns or focus areas that can be targeted by specific skincare? For example, acne, hyperpigmentation, and aging skin. Or do want to maintain your skin and reap all the wellness benefits?
Check out the chart below to find the best routine for you!
Keep in mind your skin is unique, so you might not fit into this chart and that is absolutely normal. Please reach out to me or your esthetician to get a unique tailored skincare routine.

Once you are ready to kick your self-care up a notch, add on regular facial treatments. I recommend receiving facial treatments every 4-6 weeks. These facial treatments will fill your physical, emotional, and mental wellness buckets, just like your consistent at-home routine, but they will also fill up your spiritual and social wellness buckets, too.
At Beauty by Bryn, we strive to target as many wellness categories as possible in your facial treatment to expand your personal wellness. Our facials are way more than just skin.
Your facial will target your...
- Physical wellness by maintaining your skin health,
-
Emotional wellness by encouraging self-love,
-
Mental wellness by encouraging you to take a break and quiet your mind,
-
Spiritual wellness by encouraging a deep loving connection with yourself,
-
Social wellness through the connection you will build with your esthetician in the treatment room. The connection between you and your esthetician is unique and special, there are not many people we allow that close to our hearts.
This article explains why I am so passionate about the healing power of skincare. It is more than just pretty skin, though that is one aspect of it! It is a wellness journey that expands your wellness in multiple different areas and helps you grow into the person you want to become.
I can’t wait for you to begin your skincare journey and truly feel the healing power of skincare.
