First of all, what do I mean by "Metabolic Type?" Well, you've likely heard people say the Mediterranean diet is best, or the keto diet is best, or the carnivore diet is best, or a plant-based diet is best, but do you want to know the truth? The best diet is dependent on each individual's unique metabolic type, and this is determined by a number of factors that I'll be detailing in this article. Bottom line, the concept of a "one size fits all" diet doesn't exist.
As a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), I know that the concept of a single dietary approach suiting everyone's needs disregards the inherent biochemical individuality of each person. Factors such as genetics, environment, lifestyle, and metabolic function all contribute to variations in nutritional requirements and responses to different foods. While certain dietary guidelines may offer general health recommendations, they often fail to address the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals with diverse metabolic profiles.
Enter Metabolic Typing: William Wolcott, a pioneer in the field of personalized nutrition, introduced the Metabolic Typing Diet in the 1970s, which emphasizes the unique metabolic needs of individuals and rejects the notion of a universal diet plan. Wolcott's Metabolic Typing concept proposes that individuals can be classified into distinct metabolic types based on their dominant metabolic traits and tendencies. And lucky for us, he created a test to help us identify ours!
The Metabolic Type Diet test enables you to know what nutritional path to follow in order to balance your body chemistry, and in turn optimize your health and fitness. The various metabolic and genetic nutritional requirements of different people helps characterize their "Metabolic Type." Genetic requirements such as proper fuel mixture (protein, carbohydrates, fats) make up the modern science of Metabolic Typing.
We all have genetically inherited strengths or weaknesses (or imbalances) in our:
- autonomic nervous system (controls involuntary actions like heart rate, breathing, digestion)
- carbo-oxidative system (the metabolic pathway in which carbs are broken down and oxidized to produce energy)
- lipo-oxidative system (the process by which fats are broken down and oxidized to produce energy)
- endocrine system (the network of glands that produce and release hormones)
These are the key homeostatic systems that determine your metabolic type.
These factors make a huge impact on determining which foods will fuel your body for energy and which foods will make you feel lethargic, anxious, or hungry again within 30-60 minutes after eating. Taking into account all of the external clues speaks volumes about how you function on an internal level and the way your system processes food and utilizes nutrients. By identifying your metabolic type, you can tailor your diet to support optimal metabolic function, energy production, overall well-being, and help you more easily achieve your ideal weight.
The "one size fits most" diet approach simply doesn't work. Believe it or not, vegetarian isn't better than carnivore and vice versa, generally speaking, but one is better than the other for an individual. What works for one person, will not work for another. We are all bio-individual, and this is precisely why the saying "One man's food is another man's poison" rings true! Sticking as closely as you can to your MT Diet Recommended Foods will ensure that your food remains your medicine and doesn't become your poison.
Like any fuel that requires the right combination of ingredients in order to burn at maximum efficiency, the ingredients that make up your body's "fuel mixture" (protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, and minerals) must not only be the right kind but must also be in the right proportion. Only when these conditions are met can your body fully convert your food into energy. It is this optimal cellular energy production that allows your cellular engines of metabolism to function the way they were designed to function, both in maximizing metabolic efficiency and in assuring that your food is fully converted to energy and not stored as fat.
Think of it this way, a diesel engine in a Mack truck requires a different fuel mixture than a race car's high octane gasoline engine. Or the metabolic engine of a meat-eating lion has a totally different genetically-based fuel requirement than a vegetarian elephant. This is why these "one size fits all" diets will work for some, while others end up having the opposite effect, which is to gain weight instead of losing it. This is because calories are being stored as fat instead of being converted to energy!
I am trained to assess and address the underlying causes of health imbalances through a holistic and individualized approach. This includes carefully selected lab screenings to identify your areas of dysfunction, or what I like to call "healing opportunities," and clinically correlating them to your symptoms. One of the many tools I use is Metabolic Typing analysis. I can pinpoint dietary and lifestyle modifications that align with your metabolic type and promote optimal health outcomes.
If you've tried all of the fad diets, you're hungry or experiencing cravings between meals, your energy is low, or you just aren't getting the results you want, here's how I can help:
- Personalized Nutrition Plans: I create customized nutrition plans tailored to your metabolic type, incorporating nutrient-dense foods, macronutrient ratios, and meal timing strategies that support metabolic balance and energy production.
- Functional Lab Testing: I leverage advanced functional lab tests to assess biomarkers related to hormone balance, immune function, digestion, detoxification, energy production, nervous system, and oxidative stress providing valuable insights into underlying imbalances that may impact metabolic health.
- Lifestyle Modifications: In addition to dietary recommendations, I address lifestyle factors such as stress management, sleep hygiene, exercise, and environmental toxins that can influence metabolic function and overall well-being.
- On-going Support and Monitoring: I offer support and guidance throughout your health journey, monitoring progress, adjusting recommendations as needed, and empowering you to take ownership of your health.
Why continue to guess which fuel mixture is right for you? This is precisely why I say test, don't guess. The Metabolic Typing test is one of several tests I recommend to each client, so they can fuel their body to function optimally. Embracing the principles of Metabolic Typing and functional nutrition can pave the way for a more tailored, effective, and sustainable approach to aging well.
