Let’s start simple - what is testosterone?
Testosterone is a hormone primarily produced in the testes in males, with smaller amounts also produced by the adrenal glands. It's most commonly known for its role in developing male physical characteristics, such as increased muscle mass, deeper voice, and facial hair. In men, testosterone levels typically peak in early adulthood and gradually decline with age.
For the average man, testosterone production in the body typically peaks at 18-21, and usually begins to decrease after 30. So what happens when your testosterone begins to decrease? While it is natural for your testosterone levels to decrease as you age, some external factors can cause your levels to drop faster and lower than what is typical. Symptoms of low testosterone include low libido(sex drive), low energy, decrease in muscle mass and strength, decrease in stamina, poor sleep and mood swings. The easiest and most effective way to combat low testosterone is Testosterone Replacement Therapy(TRT).
TRT, which can be done via injections or pellets, is the simple process of gradually replacing the testosterone that your body has lost naturally. Here at GameDay Mount Pleasant, we customize each treatment plan to cater to each patient so that every individual gets the treatment they need. It can take up to 4-6 weeks to feel a difference, but many of our patients have told us they feel a difference in their energy and mood as soon as a week.
Unfortunately, there has been a stigma around TRT for many years due to the unmonitored usage of testosterone, leading people to equate higher levels of testosterone with aggression and emotional volatility. On the contrary, raising testosterone levels to an optimal range actually helps men to regulate their moods and can assuage feelings of depression and anxiety.
So what is an optimal range? Well, an ordinary physician would say that as long as your levels are above 300, you are not a candidate for TRT, despite whatever symptoms of low testosterone you may exhibit. However, an optimal range would be between 800-1200. Here at GameDay Mount Pleasant, anyone under a 600 is eligible for treatment at our clinic.
The dosage for each patient is carefully prescribed in order to minimize any potential side effects. While these side effects are usually very manageable, a big concern for many men, especially for those trying to have kids, is a decrease in sperm count. We take this into account during each consultation and offer additional medication to these patients so that they can thrive in their personal lives on every level.
We understand that many men are skeptical of TRT, which is why your initial consultation at GameDay Mount Pleasant is free! This consultation includes a blood test and a consultation with me, our clinic director. Our in-house lab will give you your testosterone levels in just 10 minutes, allowing you to make the most informed choices when it comes to improving your health and wellness.
